Harvard Economist Blames Twitter for Down Economy

A new study suggests that Twitter is the root cause of the current economic malaise. Policy experts predict a Twitter moratorium may be declared for Summer 2009 as part of an effort to stimulate economic production and reverse GDP declines.

(…)

Employees who might otherwise be working productively and contributing to the economy can instead create Tweets, such as “I just realized I clipped all of my nails today except for one” or “My co-worker is drinking pepsi . Pepsi!!! I want some. Stupid Lent” or “Financial systems require high levels of trust and oversight. Take away the oversight and encourage high levels of risk for personal gain.”

The Future of Newspapers

If you read Time Magazine, you probably read it online. I don’t typically read it — but last week was different. The cover story caught my attention. “How to Save Your Newspaper” (…) The questions shuffling through their offices, and the offices at the Grey Lady, are voluminous and difficult: How do maintain subscription and newsstand revenue when news and analysis is ubiquitous at the click of a mouse? How do we ensure advertising revenue when Google and Craigslist offer a better value proposition? What happens if our online ad revenue rates crater? One can hear the panic behind every answer.

There are no answers to those questions – at least not answers which publishers wish to hear. That’s the bad news. The good news:

Time, the Times, and all the rest are simply asking the wrong questions.

The questions they should be asking is much more fundamental: Why did their business model – newsstand sales, subscriptions, and advertising, to use Mr. Issacson’s word choice – work? Why did it stop working? And how do we go back?

News is free – packaging it isn’t

It’s a simple inescapable fact – news is free.

It will happen at any time of the day and at any point in the world. (…) Free news isn’t going to kill old media but it’s reliance on the old methods of supporting outdated and expensive methods of packaging the news is what will kill them. After all you can’t kill off something that is free.

Git is the next Unix

When I first heard about git, I was suspicious that there could be anything special about it, but after watching Linus’ talk about it, I was… even more suspicious. I tried it anyway.

When I tried it, I realized something right away: what made git awesome was actually none of the things Linus had talked about, not really. Those things were more like… symptoms of the underlying awesomeness. Yes, git is fast. Yes, it is distributed. Yes, it is definitely not CVS. Those things are all great, but they miss the point.

What actually matters is that git is a totally new way to operate on data. It changes the game. git has been described as “concept-heavy”, because it does so many things so differently from everything else. After some reflection, I realized that this is far truer than I could see at first. git’s concepts are not only unusual, they’re revolutionary.

Game Distribution and the ‘Idiocy’ of DRM

(grifo nosso)

Ars Technica did an interview with execs from CD Projekt’s Good Old Games about where the problems are with current DRM implementation. “For me, the idiocy of those protection solutions shows how far from reality and from customers a lot of executives at big companies can be. You don’t have to be a genius to check the internet and see all the pros and cons of those actions.” Penny Arcade is also running a three-part series on DRM from game journalists Brian Crecente and Chris Remo. Crecente talks about how some companies are making progress in developing acceptable DRM, and some aren’t. Remo recommends against a trend of overreaction to minor gripes.
